Now that we’re in the new year, it’s time for the rumors to start flying about the new flagship devices for 2016! CNET Korea has dropped a few crumbs for us today with some info about the LG G5.
The above rendered image is reported to be based on eyewitness testimony of a prototype LG G5. Yes, it looks like LG is going to keep a removable battery in the device via a slide out mechanism from the bottom of the smartphone. You’ll also notice a familiar camera set-up on the rear of the device but the rear volume buttons have been moved to the left side of the device leaving only what appears to be a fingerprint sensor/Power button on the rear surface. No word yet on microSD card support.

This is a very interesting design that leaves me with a lot of questions. How has LG designed the device to minimize debris from entering the device? It appears that there are two additional buttons on the bottom of the device to release the “battery drawer”. How will these additional buttons change the feel of the device in the hand? The drawer along with release buttons will make for an interesting challenge for case manufacturers to overcome. LG sent out press invites to various outlets teasing a possible new device announcement on Feb 21, 2016 at MWC 2016 with the line Play begins. I’ll stay on top of this and report on any new rumors that surface.
A metal uni-body design, removable battery, and microSD card support could make this device a big winner in 2016 if all are included in a high-end device. What do you think of this design? Let me know in the comments.
